We work in rural Livingston, Izabal, Guatemala. Our service area covers ten villages in the Rio Dulce National Park region of eastern Guatemala. The Rio Dulce is a beautiful jungle river which flows from Lago Izabal, the largest lake in Guatemala, to the Caribbean Sea. Rio Dulce translates as “sweet river.”
There are no roads in our service area—all transportation is by boat and jungle path.
Our rural location creates some challenges for the population— the expense of transportation and the lack of public transportation are obstacles to accessing education, health-care services, social services, police protection, law enforcement, judicial services, and social networks.
